By setting the ball rolling with a record deal on Monotwin Records and a high profile appearance at the NFL staged American football game at Wembley between New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, London`s newest indie darlings Deadwax release their debut single through a Text download. Driving the current trend of Rock `N` Roll visionaries back to basics with two guitars, bass, drums and a handful of honestly penned tunes the foundations are set for an EP and Long Player in early 2010, Deadwax`s brand of atmospheric fluorescent indie, comes brilliantly refreshing and chilled straight from the jar.

Blues and rock harmonica great Norton Buffalo, who spent the past 32 years as a member of The Steve Miller Band, has passed away October 30 at the age of 58 after a short bout with cancer.

Buffalo had been diagnosed with lung cancer in September, when after a concert he complained of feeling ill. He was diagnosed with stage 4 Adenocarcinoma of the lower right lobe. The next day. he found out that it had spread to his brain.

Born September 28, 1951 in Oakland, California, he earned perhaps his greatest success as a member of the Steve Miller Band, a position he held for over two decades beginning in the mid-1970s; as a session player, Buffalo also lent his harmonica skills to records from performers including the Doobie Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash and Elvin Bishop. He issued his solo debut, Lovin’ in the Valley of the Moon, on Capitol in 1977, followed a year later by Desert Horizon.

After spending the 1980s primarily as a sideman, Buffalo teamed with blues slide guitarist Roy Rogers in 1991 for R&B, which earned a Grammy nomination for the track “Song for Jessica”; the duo’s follow-up, Travellin’ Tracks, appeared a year later. Additionally, Buffalo led his own band, the Knockouts.

Dan Auerbach and Pat Carney of the Black Keys are putting aside their respective side projects and will perform a benefit show for the recently deceased artist Alfred McMoore, on Friday, November 27th at Musica in Akron. Proceeds from the performance will benefit Community Support Services, an organization which aided the mentally ill McMoore before his passing. Tickets aren’t cheap, but consider the cause, and consider the rare chance to see Akron’s hometown heroes in a small setting. The event goes on sale tomorrow at noon. More information on this event can be found at the Cleveland Scene’s Music Blog, C Notes.

At some point I would have thought that Efterklang’s music couldn’t get any more grand, anymore robust, any more sweepingly cinematic but I would be wrong. Shortly after recording their beautiful album Parades in 2007, the band was invited to perform with The Danish National Chamber Orchestra. New arrangements were written and the huge group took the stage at the Koncerthuset in Copenhagen. The results are just as one would expect from a band that plays hauntingly utopic music straight from their hearts. Each nook of Performing Parades is filled with delicate sounds, epic sounds and impossibly moving sounds. Thankfully the performance was not only recorded but also filmed and both the CD and LP packages for these are accompanied by a disc documenting the performance. Efterklang has long ached to sound this full and brimming with cooperative life, now they’ve finally have the chance to fulfill that dream.

The UK’s Classic Rock station Planet Rock is reporting The Black Crowes are to release a brand new DVD entitled Cabin Fever on November 23.

Cabin Fever is a behind the scenes/performance film capturing the band’s remarkable recording sessions for their current album, Before The Frost…Until The Freeze.

The brand new studio album was recorded as live in front of a tiny studio audience at Levon Helms’ studio near Woodstock earlier this year.

The DVD will show the between song banter with the audience, behind the scenes rehearsals and interviews.

Oscar Moore had been serenading me with his guitar for years on Nat King Cole records before I happened upon his solo album with pianist Carl Perkins.

Moore’s guitar playing sounds as effortless and enchanting as it did on the records I grew up listening to. And though Perkins’ piano style isn’t as smooth as Cole’s, he wraps Moore’s guitar licks with a velvety sheen.

Their rendition of Hoagy Carmichael’s “The Nearness of You” is dreamlike. Their version of “Buddy Can You Spare a Dime,” my favorite track on the album, is an intricate study in sexiness. And Moore’s own “Walkin’ Home” is a lively blues number.

I’d forgotten how much I loved Arlie Duff’s “Y’all Come” as a kid until I saw a Youtube video clip of him performing the tune. I don’t know when I first heard it (probably at my grandmother’s house), but I do remember bouncing around the house when it came on one of the old country radio stations I used to listen to.

Here’s Arlie’s version as well as ones by Glen Campbell and Boxcar Willie.
